Living Letters - London Design Festival

A large installation is always an exciting project to be involved with and we were delighted to have been commissioned by Better Bankside and 5* Hilton Bankside Hotel to come up with and then create an installation for The London Design Festival 2016.

The key brief was that the installation had to be in-keeping with the urban feel of the Bankside area.

After brainstorming several ideas, we settled on creating what we like to call our ‘Living Letters’ - spelling the word BANKSIDE. Each letter is a 1.2m tall and is being planted up using a selection of fresh green plants, including, succulents, heathers, outdoor ferns, ivy and English herbs to name but a few.  The installation is an extension of the Hilton Bankside’s garden area along Price’s Street and brings more green to this very urban part of town.

The concept was to create a modern structure that reflects the up and coming vibe of the area, as well as bringing a living, 'green' element to the city. Our ‘Living Letters’ are designed to be in keeping with other murals in the area, that see Bankside spelt out artfully under bridges, railway arches and river side walls. As it's never been written in plants before, we were thrilled to be the first!

The letters themselves were expertly made by our wonderful event production company, Pollen Crew.  A brushed gold finish was applied to the back and edges of each letter, with the front of each one being beautifully planted up by our fab floristry team.

Once the Design Festival is over, the letters will be re-used by the hotel for functions and occasions in the future, while the plants will find new homes within the area by Better Bankside.

Be sure to take a tour around all the wonderful sights and events taking place during the London Design Festival which runs 17-25 September http://www.londondesignfestival.com
